Description
You are bidding on a computer designed/printed Greytcovers by W.J. Wladyka (USCS #9915) naval cover (design #95)(#6 of 11 ) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the loss of the SS Dorchester and the bravery of the 'Immortal Chaplains'..On the night of February 3, 1943, a German submarine fired three torpedoes off the coast of Greenland, sinking a U.S. Army troop ship, the Dorchester, with more than 900 men on board. The ship sank quickly and nearly 700 men died — the third largest loss of life at sea in World War II. Onboard with the soldiers were four military chaplains — Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish. As the ship sank, survivors witnessed the chaplains leading many of the men in prayer, then giving up their lifejackets, linking arms and going down with the ship.
The cover is cancelled with a well-struck pictorial postmark on 3 Feb. 2003 U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY 10996 and is franked with a 37c Flag stamp.
Overall cover condition is very good. The cover is a standard No. 6-3/4, 3-5/8 x 6-1/2". The blue around the edge is part of the background.
